Known for beautiful beaches, nature preserves and parks, Hutchinson Island consists of two barrier islands on Florida’s Treasure Coast. Separated by the Fort Pierce Inlet, North and South Hutchinson Islands are located approximately 110 miles north of Fort Lauderdale and 110 miles south east of Orlando (home of Disney World). NASA Kennedy Space Center and West Palm Beach, are just an hours drive, excellent for day trips. The city of Miami is just over two hours drive and Florida Keys, under 4 hours drive, are popular weekend getaways for many locals.
Around the condo, however, the numerous restaurants, hotels and shops of Vero Beach and Ft. Pierce are located on, or easily accessible from the island. Popular activities on North Hutchinson Island include fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, surfing, kite surfing, paddle boarding, and wildlife observation. On the northern end of the island is Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the nation's first such refuge with over 5,400 acres (22 km2) of protected waters and lands. On the southern end of Hutchinson Island, just a short walk on the beach from the condo, is Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. The shores and coastal waters at this park provide an abundance of recreational opportunities and its' breathtakingly beautiful beach welcomes visitors https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/Fort-Pierce-Inlet
Above is an overview of towns around the area followed by some of our favourite nearby spots noted on the maps.
Your condo, The Island Beach House, is located on the southern portion of North Hutchinson Island in the town of Ft Pierce. As you go over the bridge to the mainland and back across to South Hutchinson Island, you will be able to visit several restaurants, shops as well as weekly Farmers Markets where you can shop for food, souvenirs and crafts.
Our favorite areas to visit, however, are located right on North Hutchinson Island,, in nearby Vero Beach. Vero is one of the best places to visit the Farmers Market, restaurants and shops right on the beach. If you drive just north of the restaurants, you will see a long boardwalk, perfect for a stroll by the beach. Vero Beach is also where you will find the large shopping malls and outlet stores. Be sure to Google directions to Vero Beach’s Fresh Market our favorite grocery store for fresh produce and meats. Walmart Express is our favorite for staples, dry goods and canned items. Although Walmart is also found in Vero Beach, we recommend a visit Big Lots for a better selection of discounted housewares, beach accessories and gifts.
Sebastian Inlet is a State Park that is worth visiting for the day where you can see manatees, swim at the beach (it also has a kids beach!), go fishing, hiking and have lunch at the restaurant. Other towns worth visiting include Jensen Beach and Stuart. Both offer places to walk, beaches, restaurants, farmers markets and more
Here’s an overview of what’s around The Island Beach House:
On The Beach
There’s lot to do on the beach at Tiara Towers, but if you feel like walking on the beach, be sure to check out the nearby Pepper Park Beach where there is a lifeguard station and the adjacent Navy Seal Museum to learn about the history of the US Navy Seals and their training, right here on North Hutchinson Island. Head south down the beach to explore Ft Pierce Inlet State Park to watch surfers, kite surfers, and a great view of the Ft Pierce Inlet.
Across The Street
Be sure to check out the hiking trails and boardwalks along the river at Pepper Park to experience the mangroves. Venture out further north to visit several other parks with trails and river access. Note: if you decide to visit the mangrove island parks during sunset or when there is no wind be sure to bring bug spray!
Just half a mile south, you’ll find the nearest restaurant, Sharkeys. They offer a great casual menu that includes pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches and local seafood. Next to Sharkeys, you will also find the nearest gas station and convenience store, Cumberland Farms, as well as a hair salon.
Over The North Hutchinson Island Bridge
For a casual lunch or hear local live music in the afternoons, be sure to visit Jim’s Bait & Tackle and Marina. As the name implies, Jim’s is also great place to get bait for fishing from the beach or dock a boat at a great price. Lisa’s Kayaks are also located here should you decide to explore the mangroves and beautiful calm waters around the area.
Be sure to visit the nearby Harbor Cove Restaurant for a great lunch or dinner and live music some evenings. Walk along the marinas boardwalk to see nice boats and meet cruisers living on their boats docked at this favorite marina.
Just over the bridge, you’ll find the nearest grocery store, Publix as well as CVS, the nearest drugstore and the nearest dollar store where you can quickly pick up some beach toys or other essentials.
As you head south to the town of Ft Pierce, you’ll find Ft Pierce City Marina, waterfront restaurants, shops, tours and the Saturday Farmers Market. Head over the South Hutchinson Island Bridge to explore more restaurants, museums and beaches.
The body of water between Hutchinson Island and the mainland is called the Indian River which is part of the Indian River Lagoon System. The Indian River Lagoon is the most biodiverse lagoon ecosystem in the Northern Hemisphere and is home to more than 10,000 species of plants and animals, including one of the most diverse bird populations anywhere in America. Additionally nearly 1/3 of the nation's manatee population lives here or migrates through the Lagoon seasonally.
One of the best ways to see the lagoon is by boat. Lisa’s Kayaks offers one of the best ways to experience the lagoon either through a tour or a self guided rental. For the less adventurous Indian River Lagoon Boat Tours offers tours of the lagoon on pontoon boats.
